The Skills System certificate program has three levels. The first is a Certificate of Specialized Proficiency: Skills Coach. Although there are no specific training requirements, competency in the Skills System concepts and skills coaching techniques outlined in The Emotion Regulation Skills System for the Cognitively Challenged Clients (Brown, 2016) are necessary. Earning this certificate involves passing three online tests (90% correct or better), completing an application, submitting a supervisor’s recommendation, and passing a coded 45-minute video-conferenced oral exam (85% or better) with the treatment developer. Having a staff earn the Certificate of Specialized Proficiency: Skills Coach helps ensures that he/she understands the Skills System emotion regulation skills concepts and are able to communicate how to use skills coaching techniques in context. There is a $250 fee to cover the exam/processing time. A certificate is active for five years. An up-date oral exam is required to extend the certificate for each two-year period. There is a $250 cost for an update.
